The first quake in July 2013, measured 6.6 and was 20km deep. It struck the border of Min County and Zhang County. Another strong quake occurred about one hour later, measured at 5.6. Earthquakes were also felt in the nearby cities of Tianshui and Lanzhou in Gansu, as well as Xi'an, Baoji, and Xianyang in neighbouring Shaanxi.
The earthquakes caused at least 95 deaths, and more than 1000 people have been injured. More than 1,200 buildings have collapsed and over 21,000 severely damaged. Many local buildings, often crudely constructed, were buried in the landslides caused by the earthquakes.
DINGXI EARTHQUAKE ASSISTANCE - Your gifts have enabled us to supply food and medical aid to victims after the July earthquakes in Dingxi prefecture, Gansu Province.
CCSM New Zealand has played a small but vital part in helping Earthquake victims – funding the delivery of flour and cooking oil.
CCSM’s Medical Director visited the area along with Michelle, a New Zealand member of the last Medical Team working as interpreter and advisor. Those that contributed with finances and prayer can clearly see in the following photos that their assistance has reached the people in greatest need.
Our CCSM government contact met with the Provincial government agency about our progress in the Earthquake area and they were very pleased and will work with us to expand our medical teams and further involvement there moving forward.
MORE GOOD NEWS from our Medical Director
"We received some additional funds from a group in China, and are planning a "blankets" trip within the next 2 weeks. (the funds are yet to be wired to our account, and then we will purchase the blankets, set up the truck and finalize trip plans). We hope to take about 400 blankets to the tent villages.
It would also be nice to bring another food and clothing shipment a month later, before the winter hits hard. Please talk to us if you would like to be involved with this or the blanket trip."
Anyone wishing to donate can be assured that all funds collected will be sent to our workers on site.
